What Fiber Port Does

Every Fiber Port, Explained

Explain fiber ports and connection hardware — SFP modules, wall jacks, ONT ports, and connectors — so people plug fiber gear together correctly the first time.

🔌

Fiber Port Types

LC, SC, and the other connector shapes — how to identify a port at a glance and match the right cable.

🧩

SFP and Transceivers

The small modules that give switches and routers fiber ports — speeds, ranges, and compatibility basics.

🏠

Wall Jacks and Outlets

Fiber wall outlets in homes and offices: what plugs in where, and what never to bend or yank.

🖥️

Connecting Your Gear

ONT to router, router to switch — the right order, the right cables, and the settings that follow.

Frequently Asked

What is an SFP port?

A small slot on network gear that accepts a plug-in transceiver module. The module determines whether the port speaks fiber or copper, and at what speed and distance.

Can I bend a fiber cable?

Gently — every cable has a minimum bend radius, and kinking it past that breaks the glass inside. Loose loops are fine; sharp folds and staples are not.

Why is my fiber link light off?

Usually one of four things: a dirty or damaged connector, a mismatched transceiver, a cable plugged into the wrong port pair, or a dead port. Our checklist walks that order.
